Matt’s Major Original Characters
Professor Manfred Reinhardt: Former professor of physics, Stanford. Civilian SHADO scientist tracking and time travel research. First introduced in Best Friends, he is a recurring character in the Soul Mates Saga. A very close friend of Virginia Lake, he also becomes close friends with Commander Straker.
Captain Jennifer Erin Wallace: High level SHADO operative assigned to the New York research section, Virginia’s protégé, friend, and successor. First introduced in Mission of Mercy, she is a recurring character in both the Soul Mates Saga, and the Hewett Series. Is later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in Silver Star, and eventfully full Colonel in Matters of the Heart. In the Hewett series, Jen Wallace becomes romantically involved with Commander Straker, becoming his wife later in the series. Graduate of Cal-Tech and holds a doctorate in theoretical physics.
Matt Hewett: Civilian communications technician, and writer, introduced in Matters of the Heart, inducted into SHADO as reserve personnel after the UFO incident on Mount Munroe. A recurring character in the Hewett series and husband of Virginia Lake, he eventually becomes a full-fledged member of SHADO at the end of Glitch in the Machine. Hewett pursues a master’s in mathematics, and is promoted to full Colonel just prior to Love Never Fails.
Sara Hewett Foster: Daughter of Virginia and Matt first introduced in Love Never Fails; and the only character (so far) I have shown as both an adult and child. (Isn’t time travel fun!?!) Widow of Alec Foster, she assumes command of SHADO in the year 2029. Commander Foster travels back in time, in the year 2030, to foil an alien assassination plot on her parents. Sara has the intelligence and tenacity of her mother and the sense of duty of her father; she is a force to be reckoned with.
2nd Lieutenant Mike Watson: A communication specialist assigned to HQ, introduced in Absence and appears in both the Soul Mates Saga and the Hewett Series. He was assigned to the mission to the mid Atlantic communications dome to assist Captain Hewett in installing the fiber optic communications system in Glitch in the Machine. A protégé of Keith Ford Watson is an extremely resourceful individual.
Glen Carlson: A communications specialist assigned to HQ, introduced in Absence, and is a recurring character in the Soul Mates Saga. He was a friend of Mike Watson and Patrick Tuner.
Lieutenant Lynn Lake: Virginia Lake’s mother and retired SIS agent, introduced in Soul Mates, and is a recurring character in the Soul Mates Saga and the Hewett Series. A talented artist in her early sixties as well as a registered nurse, she has the same tenaciousness as her daughter. In Soul Mates she is recruited into SHADO, as a field operative, when she reveals her knowledge of the alien threat to Virginia and Ed. A longtime friend of James Henderson, her deceased husband flew with him in World War Two. In Matters of the Heart she and Virginia meet Hiram Hewett and his grandson Matt, in 1953, at a memorial service for her husband Robert.
Alec Foster: First-born son of Paul and Jane (Carson) Foster, and the fifth person to hold the position of SHADO Commander. He eventually marries Sara Hewett but they have no children. Alec Foster is killed by the aliens in early 2029, and his wife becomes commander. He is first mentioned as Jane Foster’s unborn child in Matters of the Heart.
Jack Crawford: Long time friend of Matt Hewett and hiking guide. First introduced in Matters of the Heart, the Crawford Path is named for his family. He helped Paul Foster save the lives of Virginia and Matt after they were attacked by aliens, on the Mount Munroe summit. He dies of a heart attack in Love Never Fails.
Sandy Crawford: Wife of Jack; also introduced in Matters of the Heart. A very warm and caring individual and good friend of Virginia and Matt, she and her husband run a bed and breakfast as well as serving as hiking guides in the White Mountain area. They have three children, John, Jeff, and Kathy.
Kathy Crawford Martin: Daughter of Jack and Sandy Crawford, she is introduced in Love Never Fails. A student at Cal-Tech majoring in astronomy she later in life discovers an object in the solar system that turns out to be the massive alien mother-ship. She marries Gary Martin, not long after her father’s death.
Historical Characters: These characters form a major part of my back-story for Virginia and Matt.
Lieutenant Colonel Robert F. Lake: Virginia’s father, mentioned in both the Soul Mates Saga and the Hewett Series, a World War Two B-17 pilot, who was shot down over Germany after the Dresden raid on February 14, 1945. Lake’s aircraft was in fact attacked and destroyed by a UFO, as witnessed by the future General James L. Henderson, a close friend. In the Hewett Series, Lake and Henderson were both friends of General Hiram B. Hewett, the grandfather of Matt Hewett.
Brigadier General Hiram B. Hewett: A veteran of both World Wars, General Hewett was the base commander where Robert Lake and James Henderson were assigned. A no-nonsense leader who thought nothing of risking his life to save others as depicted in Matters of the Heart. General Hewett saved the life of James Henderson when the B-17 they were flying crash landed on the field and caught fire. Hewett freed Henderson from the burning wreckage of the aircraft.
