I came up with the idea for “Soul Mates” after I found the SHADO Library on the internet back in December. Ever since I saw the series back when I was ten years old, I have always felt that Ed and Virginia belonged together. I did not find any stories that paired then up so I decided to write my own.
Prologue:
As the story opens we find Commander Lake in a confrontation with General Henderson. This was a fun scene to write as both Lake and Henderson are very powerful individuals. Henderson is trying to get Ginny to fall for a bluff and relinquish command, and of course she will hear none of it. She after all had a very good teacher. We find out that Straker has been abducted and believed to be dead until just before the General got to HQ. He has an utronic transponder that allows SHADO to track him.
The General backs down and Ginny heads to control and we find out that they have located the UFO holding Straker. Foster is setting up for an attack that will hopefully bring the aliens up from the bottom of Loch Ness. Virginia has to plan for the worst however, as he calls on her best friend, Gay Ellis in Sky 5, to destroy the UFO if it tries to escape.
The UFO lifts off before Foster is ready and Ginny is forced to give an order that she dreads, “Intercept and destroy.” Gay follows orders and shoots down the alien craft, and subsequently the signal is lost from the commander’s transponder. Virginia assumes the worst and excuses herself, she escapes to her office and we find out that she was engaged to Ed.
Chapter 1:
We jump back nine months to just after “Timelash” and Virginia is still in the medical center recovering from the ordeal. Jackson releases her and she goes to see Alec as he has flown in to assume command while Ginny and Ed recover. She has just stated to remember bits and pieces of their ordeal, enough to know that Ed had saved her life.
After seeing Alec she waits at Ed’s bedside holding vigil; waiting for him to wake up. Hours later Ed wakes up from a nightmare shouting Virginia’s name. He finds out that the incident is over and he had destroyed the piece of equipment that had been modified to produce the Timelash effect. Ginny also finds out for the first time that Ed is attracted to her as well. The swoon factor is off the charts here for Ginny.
The next morning Ed is back on his feet and he Alec and Virginia brainstorm the Timelash incident. Alec also fills them in on the progress of the projects he has been assigned to. They figure out a temporary solution to the problem and realize that a better plan is needed. Poor Henderson, he’s going to have to spend some money. After Alec leaves the big moment arrives, not quite as Ed had planned, he asks Ginny to go to the dinner and the LSO concert with him. Of course she says yes.
Chapter 2:
Foster arrives back from Moonbase so Alec heads back to Dreamland early. Ed and Ginny start to see each other in a different light as they are both dressed to the nines for the black tie affair. They have known each other over four years and the conversation at dinner reflects that fact. They both are comfortable sharing more intimate details of their lives. By chance they run into Paul Foster and Jane Carson, whom he has just started seeing. To Paul’s credit he keeps his own council concerning Ginny and Ed.
Chapter 3:
This chapter has a lot going on, both with Virginia and Ed, as well as the aliens being up to their usual no good. We find out that Ayshea Johnson has transferred to Moonbase, and her place at HQ is being taken by Tara Paulson. Ed and Virginia arrive at the concert and before it starts Virginia reveals to Ed that she hasn’t been with anyone since she divorced her husband. She knows that Ed knew of her relationship with both Craig Collins and Paul Foster, but she makes it clear certain boundaries were never crossed. Virginia will reveal to him later that while her relationship with Collins might have blossomed into intimacy, had it been given a chance, that wasn’t the case with Foster.
Meanwhile on Loch Ness, the aliens abduct a young lady and kill her boyfriend as they harvest his organs. He is left on the beach and the girl is removed to the spacecraft. On Lake Superior a great lakes freighter is destroyed by another undetected UFO. One survivor is left clinging to a life jacket.
Ed and Virginia have both enjoyed the concert and each other’s company. On the way back to Ginny’s apartment she asks Ed to go flying with her the next morning. It’s late and Ginny invites him to stay at her place rather than have to drive home. She tells him she has a rollaway in the closet. At this point Ginny knows that she is in love with Ed, but she doesn’t want to make him uncomfortable. And Ed is beginning to recognize how much he cares for her.
In the Pacific Ocean, Skydiver 5 picks up a, strange signal on sonar that Gay immediately recognizes as a UFO traveling underwater. They torpedo and destroy the alien craft.
On the flight to Loch Ness Ed and Virginia come to the realization that the alien craft may be using a quantum singularity as a power source. When they get to the loch and have over flown it a couple of times, Ed notices a disturbance in the water which turns out to be a UFO lifting off from under the lake. By chance Peter Carlin was in Sky 1 en-route to Glasgow when radar picks up the UFO. He arrives just as the alien craft has forced Ed and Virginia down, and destroys the UFO.
Chapter 4:
Virginia and Ed meet up with Captain Carlin and the SHADO team that was dispatched to the area. The field that they were forced down in is only a short distance from the cove where they found the mutilated body of the young man.
In the command mobile Virginia develops the film she took, of the UFO, as it was broaching the surface. Ed and Virginia learn the identities of the two victims. The technician repairs and refuels Ginny’s aircraft and the pair fly back to London, hitting bad weather on the way.
At this point the story breaks into the first scene of the episode “Mindbender” where the UFO destroys itself within striking distance of Moonbase. Straker and Foster take the next lunar shuttle to investigate the crash site. While up at Moonbase, Straker promotes Nina Barry to Lt. Colonel and officially gives her command of Moonbase. The next morning Ed sees Virginia drinking her coffee in control and he steals it from her. Obviously there is some romantic interplay going on here as she steals it back from him while he is talking with Henderson. I wanted to tie into the series a bit and this scene was perfect for showing a growing relationship between Ginny and Ed.
Chapter 5:
Fast forward six weeks to the opening scene of “The Long Sleep”. Straker walks in into HQ in a particularly good mood, seeming much more relaxed than he has been in the past. He greats Virginia, as she is on the phone, and both of them seem relaxed with each other.
The next day at the hospital Straker walks out onto the balcony and looks down to see Virginia waiting for him. In his thoughts we find out that he loves her but is afraid of risking their friendship. They have gotten very close over the past six weeks, but they haven’t yet crossed the boundary of physical intimacy. Straker withdraws has he walks down to her not wanting to burden her with his guilt.
Virginia will have none of it, as she watches him walk down the path, she reaches a decision that she had been pondering for weeks. They both love each other and it’s Virginia who admits it first. Ed realizes what she has risked by her admission and decides to give the relationship a chance based on a promise they make to each other that they will always be friends.
Out of all the scenes from the show that concern Ginny and Ed, none were more powerful than this one in showing the growing emotional attachment between them. It was a perfect springboard to launch their relationship to the next level.
I enjoyed writing the next scene where the heavy thunderstorm wakes them up and the reader realizes they have spent the night together. This was much more powerful than just having them go home together and we get some insight into their feelings as the bedroom conversation ensues.
A week later Virginia and Ed meet with Henderson to discuss the proposed upgrade plans for SHADO and as much as Henderson hates the idea, of spending money, he knows that they have no choice. Before they leave Henderson’s office, he brings up the subject of their romantic relationship. While Henderson is not concerned about the affair itself he is troubled by the fact that Ginny Lake is second in command, a position Ed wants her to have permanently. Ed immediately counters with his own personal history of putting SHADO above all else. Henderson begrudgingly concedes, sending the recommendation through without his endorsement, knowing that the committee will rule in the commander’s favor. It allows him to cover his ass if Straker is wrong.
As Ginny and Ed drive back to HQ we learn that her father flew with Henderson during World War Two and she has known him since she was a child. She believes Henderson doesn’t trust her judgment because of the circumstances surrounding the death of her father. Ed is troubled by the details as he has seen Virginia’s skill as a pilot and he believes that piloting skill is a family trait. Ed and Ginny make plans to see her mother on Sunday.
I had a lot of fun with this part as well as it was fun to give Virginia a very complex back story and be able to tie it into the plot. I also set the story up to bring in a new character, Lynn Lake; Ginny’s mom. As the reader will see, she is a force to be reckoned with, just like her daughter.
Back at HQ, Ed gets Alec on the line and asks him to do some digging into the incident surrounding the death of Ginny’s dad. He has a feeling that this is a cover up and he wants to know why. He has two reasons for this, the first is obvious; Ed loves Ginny and feels that she deserves to know the truth. The second reason is less evident as Ed suspects’ alien involvement as many pilot accounts of UFO sighting were documented during the war.
On Skydiver 5, Captain Ellis is bringing her ship to the SHADO naval installation for inspection and shore leave. As she discusses her weekend plans with Joan, she finds out that rumors of Ginny and Ed have reached her ears and moves to squash them. Ginny is Gay’s best friend and she makes it clear that she will not have Ginny’s reputation tarnished. Much to her chagrin one of Joan’s favorite pastimes is gossip.
More to come.
