Dark Desire:
My thoughts:
I had fancied the idea of writing a vampire Ginny story ever since I read Alison’s story “Someone Else’s War” worried all while reading it that the vampires were going to get her. The idea came up again when Denise and I were discussing “The Bodyguard” on the old Yahoo group months ago. The subject of Dragon’s Straker vampire came up and I again considered how things would work putting Ginny in that place.
Fast forward to October and here I am tackling not only a subject I never thought I could write but an NFanFic story to boot. Truth be told, this story is way outside of my comfort zone. Not something I would normally read and certainly not something I would have considered writing. But my muse had other plans.
The hardest part was getting by my trepidation of being explicit. My first two drafts were too “nice” for a very dark and very evil subject. The bottom line is I wrote it explicit because it had to be. The subject matter demanded nothing less. I’m happy with the way it came out. On one side I’m sure there are those who will say I didn’t go far enough and on the other side those who would say that it’s too explicit. But mixed reviews are a fact of life and I’m not going to worry about that. This was a groundbreaking story for me and it explored an area I didn’t think I was capable of writing in.
As often happens this is going to spark a follow on (actually a series). I’ve always believed that legends have a certain basis in fact a belief that will be displayed in the story “Dark Desire 2: A Ray of Hope.” Doctor Jackson will play a pivotal role in the series as he discovers the science behind the legend. This will probably be NFanFic as well as I have planned a flashback scene showing when Ginny was attacked in the cave. It’s a very unpleasant scene that I’m not looking forward to writing. I’m going to need to be in the right frame of mind to pull this off.
I’m sure the vampire purists will not appreciate my scientific approach to the lore, but being a science fiction writer this is how I have to and how I enjoy portraying it.
I hope everyone enjoyed reading the story as it was certainly a learning experience.
Matt
